Nepal

For decades Nepal has been the world’s most sought after trekking and mountaineering destination. However classifying it as just that would be a gross injustice. This ancient, beautiful country holds a surprise at every juncture and you don’t necessarily need to be a mountain adventure junkie to enjoy Nepal.

Nepal mostly consists of small towns, with a sprinkling of big cities like Kathmandu and Pokhran. Almost frozen in time, these cities have soaked in centuries of spiritual fervor. The people of Nepal are a religious lot and take intense pride in performing number of rituals for a number of festivals.

With trekking expeditions being one of the main tourist attractions, there is so much more to do when in Nepal! Snatch a map and toodle up the mountains or the beautiful Chitwan National Park and discover the Himalayas for yourself. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you could try para- hawking- which is basically paragliding with the help of trained hawks and eagles – how cool does THAT sound!

With land and air covered, Nepal isn’t far behind on the waterworks. Nepal is also counted as one of the world’s premier rafting destinations, with a broad sweep of rapids from Grade I to Grade VI. So be it just to gaze at the glorious Everest, climb it, attempt to climb it or discover an ancient world cocooned in the Himalayas, Nepal will keep calling you back again and again.

Bhutan

Nestled in the mighty Himalayas, one might almost miss the tiny country of Bhutan nestled between Sikkim and the North-East of India. However, it will be quite hard to ignore what Bhutan as to offer to the thirsty traveller.

Bhutan isn’t just another mountain- country with its obvious mountainous beauty. The difference lies in how wonderfully the people of Bhutan have accepted this blessing and have thrived for generations to create a land that breathes purity, happiness and unadulterated contentment. With the country’s annual progress being calculated on a gross happiness scale, you are sure to be welcomed with a warm smile, along with a bowl of delicious spicy fare in all probability, everywhere that you go. The hospitality of the Bhutanese is legendary.

With almost over 90% of the country being under forest cover, it isn’t a surprise that Bhutan is a carbon negative country. The Bhutanese hold faith, loyalty and contentment above all and the love for their land reflects in pristine, un-touched lands and mankind that have co-existed for centuries. Of course, these results in a lot of climbing and public transport, but when you get where you want to get, it almost feels like a piece of heaven. From breath-taking sunrises, gorgeous ancient Buddhist monasteries, quaint waterfalls to maybe a chance encounter with your spirit animal in the wild, even urban Bhutan will leave you surprised. Did you know that Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan, has absolutely no traffic signals?! Talk about an ideal world.

The tiny nation of Bhutan is literally a niche in the mighty Himalayas but will take up a huge chunk of space in your heart and will remain in your memory forever.

Srilanka

There’s something wildly fascinating about Sri Lanka which is beyond the breath-taking landscapes, golden beaches and remote temples & stupas which every other blog and guide books seems to showcase. No matter how much closer to reality we are growing through virtual tours via the good old internet, there will always be a special thrill of discovering all those little trails and sights, thrills and experiences of an island life.

For westerners, Sri Lanka has always been touted as a really economical beach destination but if you want to really experience, you have to make the effort to soak in the country’s culture, go a bit more local and a bit less touristy. With a history that goes back centuries, Sri Lanka is rife with tradition, history and colorful stories so there won’t be any dearth of instagrammable moments when traveling. Opt for a day trip to the Handunugoda Tea Estate instead of Kandy and Ella, catch the stilt fishermen go about their job anywhere between Dalawela and Ahangama, go whale watching at Mirissa beach or go off on a birdwatching boat trip down the Old Dutch Canal and into the wetland lagoon at Negombo.

The popular haunts like the 1200 steps of The Lion Rock, Sigiriya, the sprawling ruins of Anuradhapura and the Galle fort city with its old Dutch colonial buildings  has an incredible bohemian vibe and makes for great #followmeto pics.

Sri Lanka, with its lush forests, an abundance of animals and plants, lovely people and rich culture is as sweet as it is lush and wild. During the dry season, Minneriya National Park is the site of a great wildlife spectacle called “The Gathering”, where hundreds of elephants congregate around the lake to graze on the green grass.

Whether it’s the colours, the curry, the smiles, the sights or simple the tea… Sri Lanka definitely is a place to return to and a place, that will certainly leave you with a lot of beloved memories.

Had an amazing holiday with ILH Tours. They were two very different tours, with the hustle & bustle of Delh and many cultural sights in the North, including the Taj Mahal, and then a more relaxed pace in Kerala, our highlight being the stay on the Houseboat on lake, followed by 4 nights at a luxury resort. A fantastic experience.
